Neuroscience Seminar: Academic Exchange and Clinical Training in Oaxaca

On August 27 and 28, AMSA held the Neuroscience Seminar in Oaxaca, a program designed for young physicians to strengthen their knowledge and skills across different areas of neuroscience, while encouraging the exchange of experiences that can be applied to their professional practice and patient care.

Held in collaboration with Centro Médico ABC, the seminar brought together specialists with experience across different fields of neuroscience. The academic program addressed a range of clinical perspectives, including pediatric neurology, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, neurosurgery, and critical care, among others.

An academic program across different areas of neuroscience

Over the course of two days, the program included sessions focused on different neurological conditions and areas of clinical practice. Topics included neurological evaluation and neurodevelopment, epilepsy, seizures, status epilepticus, cerebrovascular disease, headaches, neuromuscular diseases, movement disorders, neuroinfections, central nervous system tumors, and neurosurgery.

The program also incorporated topics related to the management of critically ill patients, as well as specific aspects of neurological care in both pediatric and adult populations. This range of topics allowed participants to explore different clinical scenarios and expand the tools they can apply in their professional practice.

Faculty and Course Directors

The seminar was directed by Dr. Carlos Navarro Martínez and Dr. Roberto de Leo Vargas, with the participation of faculty from Centro Médico ABC with expertise in different areas of neuroscience.

Faculty members included Dr. Adalberto González Astiazarán, Dr. Aurelio Méndez Domínguez, Dr. Diego Ontañon Zurita, Dr. Javier Andrés Galnares Olalde, Dr. Juan Manuel Calleja Castillo, Dr. Juvenal Franco Granillo, Dr. Michel Gustavo Mondragón Soto, Dr. Nadia Alejandra Gandarilla Martínez, and Dr. Paul Shkurovich Bialik.

The diversity of the faculty’s academic and professional backgrounds provided participants with different perspectives and clinical experiences, enriching the discussions throughout the seminar.

Taking knowledge beyond the seminar

One of the objectives of the program was for the knowledge and tools shared during the seminar to extend beyond the academic sessions and reach the settings where participants practice medicine. In this way, continuing medical education also becomes an opportunity to share knowledge with other healthcare professionals and contribute to better patient care.

Through the Neuroscience Seminar in Oaxaca, AMSA and Centro Médico ABC strengthened a space for academic exchange and professional development, connecting young physicians with specialists from different areas of neuroscience and providing a broader perspective on the challenges of clinical practice.
