The OMI-MEX Seminar in Neurosurgery (Spine), held in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine, brought together specialists from Mexico and Latin America in Mexico City for a program focused on the comprehensive approach to spinal pathologies and surgical decision-making in spine neurosurgery.

The seminar featured faculty members Roger Härtl, MD, Claudius Thomé, MD, and Michael Dittmar, MD, who shared their clinical and academic expertise through sessions addressing some of the current major challenges in spinal surgery.

Throughout the program, academic lectures, workshops, and fellows’ case presentations were combined to create a dynamic environment for learning and exchange among specialists from different countries and clinical settings.

Topics covered during the seminar included the management of cervical and thoracolumbar trauma, surgical strategies for cervical and lumbar degenerative disorders, deformity surgery, spinal tumors, spinal infections, navigation and robotics in spinal surgery, and the principles of minimally invasive spine surgery.

One of the seminar’s central components was its practical approach. Through workshops and interactive sessions, participants strengthened their understanding of instrumentation techniques, spine patient evaluation, and surgical decision-making, developing skills directly applicable to their daily clinical practice.

The fellows’ case presentations also created valuable opportunities for academic discussion, allowing participants to compare approaches, share experiences, and analyze clinical scenarios from both international and Latin American perspectives.

Beyond the academic content, the seminar fostered meaningful connections among specialists across the region, promoting professional collaboration and continuous learning beyond the classroom.

The OMI-MEX Seminar in Neurosurgery (Spine) is part of AMSA’s continuing medical education program, which promotes high-level academic experiences and international collaboration to strengthen specialist training across Mexico and Latin America.
